Project Description
The Strawbs full electric band joining us as part of their 50th anniversary concert tour
Although originally forming in the mid 60’s, coming out of the exciting British Folk Movement alongside Fairport Convention, Pentangle, Al Stewart and Roy Harper, this tour will mark the 50th Anniversary of the band’s first major recording, being the first UK band to be signed by the famous Hollywood label A & M , under the guidance of founders Herb Alpert and Gerry Moss.
Major chart success followed with classic albums “From the Witchwood”, “Grave New World”, “Ghosts”, “Hero & Heroine”, “Bursting at the Seams” and “Dragonfly”, earning the band two Gold albums and over 30 weeks in the Billboard charts with seven consecutive albums charting. Massive coast to coast North American tours swiftly followed, sharing the stage with The Eagles, Santana and Frank Zappa.
From the days of Sandy Denny, pre Fairport and Sonja Kristina, pre Curved Air, the band have always enjoyed the finest soloists in their ranks. Rick Wakeman and his son Oliver , both moving on to join Yes as well as Rick’s other son Adam to Ozzie Osbourne and Black Sabbath. Don Airey went on to join Deep Purple, Blue Weaver to the Bee Gees. The keyboard stool for the last three years has been filled by virtuoso pianist/guitarist Dave Bainbridge, formerly of the band Iona, whose blend of Folk, Rock and Celtic music has endeared them to audiences for over 25 years.
Their new album ” The Ferryman’s Curse” received rave reviews on both sides of the Atlantic and saw the Strawbs back in the album charts for the first time in over 30 years.
The album, recorded in 2019 was recently voted by Prog Magazine , one of the top 10 albums of the last decade. High praise indeed. The promotion tour for the album in North America resulted in sold out shows and spectacular reviews of the live show. There was also last year a special Golden Anniversary
Weekend, just outside New York, featuring many former Strawbs , and special guests including Tony Visconti and Annie Haslam from Renaissance, as well as orchestral performances and a finale which included the United Nations Choir.
The Strawbs of the 21st Century are the the constant guiding force, founder, main songwriter and frontman Dave Cousins, alongside long time band mates since the 70’s, Dave Lambert on Lead Guitar, Chas Cronk on Bass, driven by the powerhouse drumming of Tony Fernandez also joining in the 70’s and still a regular member of Rick Wakeman’s band as well as the afore mentioned Dave Bainbridge on keyboards. Don’t miss one of the most dynamic bands on the circuit with a rare full Electric show.
A MUST SEE BAND FOR ALL FANS OF CLASSIC ROCK!
